Asha Bhonsle

Asha Bhonsle’s Mera kuch saamaan tumhare paas pada hai is my all-time favourite song. I remember, when Gulzar wrote this song for Izajat and requested RD Burman to give music, RDB flatly refused. He said he is not bound to give music to whatever Gulzar writes. This does not follow any grammar of poetry, how can he bind the so-called lyrics into music. Gulzar’s persistence and faith on RDB won the day. When I think of one song it is this song. Asha’s list of songs is very long. I too have a long list of my favourites

Aao huzur tumko sitaro me le chalu, Kismat

Bekasi had se jab guzar jaaye, Kalpna

Nadi naare na jaao shyam, Mujhe jeene do

Ach huye sapne tere. Kala bazar

In aankhon ki masti, Umrao jaan

Ek Pardesi Mera Dil Le Gaya, Phagun

Nazar Lagi Raja Tore Bangle Par, Kala Pani

Aankhon Se Jo Utri Hai, Phir Wohi Dil Laaya Hoon

Ab Ke Baras Bhejo, Bandini

Yeh Reshmi Zulfon Ka Andhera, Mere Sanam

Chura Liya Hai Tumne, Yaadon Ki Baarat

Sapna Mera Toot Gaya, Khel Khel Mein

Piya Bawri, Khubsoorat

Dil Cheez Kya Hai, Umrao Jaan

Khaali Haath Shaam Aayi, Ijaazat

Radha Kaise Na Jale, Lagaan
