On Writing and Reading

While writing, I have always taken more time thinking than putting words on paper.
When I used to write a weekly column of 600–700 words, I would begin with 3,000–4,000 words and then cut it down to size. With time, the first drafts grew shorter. Now, when I revisit those old pieces, I feel they can still be reduced.
The same happened with reading. I once read a lot, but now I read less and think more. What I could not understand then, I often understand now. I buy fewer books, but spend more time with each.
It seems less can indeed mean more.
